The center is located on the Gberefu peninsular which separates the Lagoon of Lagos from the Atlantic along the Nigerian coast line. During the workcamp volunteers will practically support ongoing efforts at the permaculture forest garden, establish a tree nursery in the center for tree planting on the peninsular and raise awareness about climate change, the danger deforestation on human health and wildlife species. EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Volunteers gain increased understanding of climate change science, holistic approach of permaculture to sustainability
  • Forest dependent locals learn of ways to better protect their environment without endangering their livelihood
  • Strengthened role of the Environmental Education Centre in environmental protection of the peninsular Lagos.

Activities and Expected Results of the Workcamp: The Youth Center its a community social space to generate citizenship, to create and educate. The Center provides services to women, children, youth, seniors and disabled to foster their personal development with entrepreneurship projects, health, non-formal education, culture, arts , recreation, sports and the production of organic products that are grown in the garden of the house.

The volunteers will conduct various activities, according to their skills, experiences and interests, under the frame of the programmed activities “Youth Leaders in Action” – as well as academic activities such as the strengthening of some educational subjects; implementing and developing various workshops with the girls that will raise their spirit of initiative and creativity; supporting in the workshops of sewing, weaving, painting and sports activities; recreational activities such as music, dance, handcrafts.  implementing the home, making murals, painting rooms and planting organic vegetables and plants in the garden.

The volunteers are going to work every day from Monday to Friday, except on the weekend.

This project aims to raise international cooperation and community development in the region of “Valle de Morelia-Queréndaro”. The international volunteers will receive basic training on the following topics:

  • Home gardens,
  • Management and use of organic waste (composting, manure solids and liquids),
  • Ecological pots

Then, the volunteers will carry out campaigns in the communities surrounding the institution (Tarímbaro, Álvaro Obregón, Cuitzillo, among others) in which is ecological awareness will be promoted along with community members with the tools designed by international volunteers and through activities as well like :

  • creating community gardens,
  • preparation of compost,
  • management and waste separation,
  • recovery and beautification of public spaces,
  • reforestation

It will be a goal to create impact within the institution as part of the activities undertaken within the Workcamp, so the volunteers will do some activities for the benefit of the institution including: maintenance of green areas, classification and marking of the flora of the institution, rehabilitation of common areas. After that pilot project, this project turns to focus more on the education especially highlighting the mental side of the children in the prostitution. Tegalrejo project at moment is the follow up of workcamps that are regularly organized between IIWC and NICE Japan by setting up a shelter. This shelter is used for children to learn their school subject and to gain soft skills such as handicraft, dance, singing, etc. assisted by volunteers. This year it will be the 4th international group for this project. Name of the Organisation: YAP-Youth Action for Peace Location of the Workcamp: Tramonti, Campania Region, Italy Dates of the Workcamp: 16/08/2015‑27/08/2015 Thematics of the Workcamp: Environmental Activities and Expected Results of the Workcamp: This work camp is organized for the second time in collaboration with ACARBIO (Associazione Costiera Amalfitana Riserva Biosfera) and the local municipality of Tramonti. ACARBIO is an NGO engaged in the candidature of the Amalfi Coast as Biosphere Reserve within the MAB-UNESCO programme. Its activities focus on the conservation and safeguard of the natural and cultural heritage of the Amalfi Coast, by promoting any kind of sustainable development with projects regarding the environment, biodiversity, tourism, local tradition, mobility, green energy. Most of the activities are held in the village of Tramonti which is part of the beautiful Amalfi Coast. This project is intended to help following this path, giving the opportunity to raise awareness about environmental protection at local level, and at the same time promoting volunteering, international cooperation and the involvement of local youth. The activities of this work camp will be divided in two parts. One will be focused on the cleaning of the green areas and side of the roads of Tramonti in order to make the village nicer and at the same time send a message to tourists and local population. The second part of the activities will be about recycling workshops (re-use of waste materials) and other outside work to prepare a green area where to organize a final party with the local community. Here you will pursue the association’s two main projects started 2 years ago by other international volunteers – building a big collective kitchen and landscaping the garden. Along with dynamic workcamp leaders, you will share the working time as well as the meals and intercultural exchanges with a team of local social insertion workers and a group of French teenagers. Work : Masonry and gardening will be the main activities. Half of the work will be dedicated to continue the building of the kitchen next to Citrus association’s office. The other half will be spent on various tasks in the garden, where we grow both vegetables and flowers and provide the village inhabitants with a nice place to meet and run gardening workshops. Through our daily consuming practices, especially the use of packaging, we are involved in this worldwide natural disaster. Even if the region of Lozere is one of the most protected and preserved area in France, and is part of a national park, the inhabitants of this region are also concerned by this problem and should think about a sustainable solution to the management of rubbishes and wasted packaging. This project of youth exchange is integrated into the continuity of the reflection committed within the Passadou association: what do we set up so that every citizen of the world becomes aware of current environmental stakes? It seems within the competence of the association to educate and to raise awareness the youth towards a sustainable development, and to give them the ways to their level, to act in knowledge and in conscience. Besides provoking in the oceans, the death of million birds, fishes and marine mammals, the plastic waste affect human populations today. On one hand, waste at sea increases the difficulties for fishing, and on the other hand, the human being at the end of the chain food, ingest fragments of plastics which can have ill effect on the health. Project: It has been now 5 years since the Normandie-Maine Concordia regional office settled in the popular neighborhood of Le Mans called Les Sablons. The goal of its establishment was the creation of various volunteering projects as part of the social development of the city. Indeed, it would open this neighborhood to an international scale through the creation of a real dynamic in which locals and young locals would get involved. Concordia has been organizing international workcamps for the past 2 years in order to develop local activities for the kids and inhabitants of the neighborhood. Last year’s workcamp was very successful and was the opportunity to organize a beautiful block party at the end of the project. This year, we want to renew the experience by organizing 2 camps during the summer, in close partnership with the educational team and specialized prevention team of Les Sablons and the Youth Service of Le Mans.

Work: The workcamp of July will consist in creating and building temporary spaces with recycled materials which will be used in August: huts in wood, playgrounds, meeting points in wood… You will be in charge of organizing an event at the end of your workcamp. This workcamp will enable the youth of Les Sablons to take part in free activities organized in the heart of their neighborhood and to become aware of intercultural meetings and international commitment. A particular attention will be paid to the participation of the residents, local organisations and the youth in the creation of activities to develop local events.

Name of the Organisation: JAVVA Location of the Workcamp: Templeuve (Belgium) Dates of the Workcamp: 13/07/2015-02/08/2015 Thematics of the Workcamp: Environmental Activities and Expected Results of the Workcamp: PARTNER: “L’Enfance de l’Art”, created in 1997, is a non profit organisation whose aim is to help parents to become more involved in their children’s education. To that purpose, the organisation set up hosting facilities for children or people with reduced autonomy, leisure workshops, nurseries, schools. The organisation follows Steiner pedagogy principles. L’Enfance de l’Art hosts about 105 children from 0 to 12 years old. The kindergarten, the nursery, the nursery school and the primary school are recognized by the French-speaking Community of Belgium and the organisation is now established in the former boarding school of « Dames de la Providence ». These buildings are rented for a very low price before a probable purchase in order to avoid vandalism. They were dilapidated and deserted since 2004 before the parents of the organisation decided to begin renovating them and that’s where the workcamp steps in! WORK: In partnership with a construction company focused on social improvement, l’Enfance de l’Art organises a renovation workcamp in the former boarding school of « Dames de la Providence » that has hosted for 3 years the new Waldorf school of the French-speaking community of Belgium, as well as a kindergarten in the first of the six renovated buildings. This company uses ecological material and techniques that are in harmony with our environment. Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 12 am and from 2 pm to 4 pm, on the renovation of a building in order to turn it into a new daycare centre for children from 2 to 3 years old and related premises (toilets, kitchen, dormitory, playroom,…). Besides we will organise different voluntary actions actively involving the local communities. The volunteers will be responsible for running the accommodation, Creative Space, they will share the household tasks among each other. Name of the Organisation: VJF Location of the Workcamp: Brandenburg, Bernau near Berlin Dates of the Workcamp: 27/07/2015-07/08/2015 Thematics of the Workcamp: Enviromental Activities and Expected Results of the Workcamp: The main works will be done in the wood. The volunteers will do various environmental works as well as renovation and construction works on the island and in the forests around the island. Possible tasks are removing bushes and invasive small tree species, collecting rubbish and wood, repairing works and so on. Volunteers should be prepared to be flexible and take part in any work that will support the foresters. The accommodation will be very basic. Participants will sleep in three large tents on camp beds. The infrastructure on the island is very basic without electricity and warm water, not even a warm shower. There is no heating in the tents and on the island you have to use compost toilets. The accommodation is quite isolated so volunteers should come with ideas about how to entertain themselves in the evenings! Name of the Organisation: FIYE Poland Location of the Workcamp: Wieliszew, mazovian region, Poland, Europe Dates of the Workcamp: 01/08/2015-15/08/2015 Thematics of the Workcamp: Social, Environmental Activities and Expected Results of the Workcamp: The workcamp will be focused on pro-environmental efforts of the local community. The workcamp is organized in this community each year for few years. Every year it gathers local youth who work and spend free time together with volunteers. They are encouraged to volunteer, get involved more in the local youth association and take more active role in the community public life. Some of the local volunteers from previous years work actively in the community as town council members. We plan to involve international volunteers together with locals in environmental work (cleaning and renovation of the public area using recycled materials). Organizing workshops about sustainability for intl. volunteers and then organizanig workshop by intl. volunteers for locals during local fest. We plan also to show during the event results of few years of the camp for the community (as photo gallery and stories of previous local volunteers). We want to highlight the positive change that the workcamps brought to Wieliszew and we expect to involve more people in the pro-sustainability actions taken by the commune. This is the reason why the Harvest and Threshing Feasts, when you reap with hand ancient wheat grains it is a chance to involve the community and the old farmers who still remebember the traditional techniques. The participants to the Fest are also encouraged to join, since the bread that will be cooked in the next year with the harversted wheat will be very cheap for them. The Feasts will include educational workshops and artistical events (music and buskers) while there will be the chance to buy local products.
